Are there any options for moving the under hood evaporator box under the dash? Will the vintage air 73-86 kit work, or better yet has anyone fabbed up an evaporator box for cheap?

My AC is broken, compressor seized, and a couple lines have been open for a while. I figure if I'm going to move it, nows the time. The Vintage air evaporator kit for vehicles with factory air is about $600 and $1125 as a complete kit.

To fix my factory setup I'll need at minimum a compressor and drier and maybe an inline filter. I've heard that usually a seized compressor will spew trash into the system. After that it'll still be R-12.

I just spent a g getting my stock stuff working again. In hindsight, I wish I went with the Vintage Air stuff. Cleans up the firewall nicely.

I pulled the evaporator today. I wasn't really sure what I was going to do, but even if I go with a stock setup it'll come from the parts truck. The one on mine has a crack and is covered in oil. The reason I pulled it, easier to change passenger side manifold.

Looks like a vintage air setup might be in my future. I might even try building something. I build one for a old Ford unibody I had years ago. Just a simple box that held the evaporator and a fan. Worked really really well.
