ext. door handle 77 silverado

I'm putting my new door handles on and i've unbolted the handles and pushed the button in and pulled the handle out of the door and i can't get the little piece of metal over the ball thing on the top of the shaft

can anyone that has replaced these handles before, or knows what i'm talkin about help me
