Most GM senders are a ground signal. The resistance changes as the level changes. If I remember correctly full is 0 ohms and like 240 ohms on empty (I could be backwards on that. 0 ohms might be empty. No power wire is used.

The power you speak of is probably for your pump. all you need is one wire for the sender.

DOOOONT put power anywhere near the sender wires.

Its a big loop, think of the gauge like a light bulb, the more voltage the brighter the bulb, with 12v+ on one side of the bulb. The ground goes into the sender, through the resistance array (the potentiometer) and out to the gauge. If there is an empty tank, the bulb is bright (low resistance, or low reading on the gauge) and if there is a full tank the bulb is almost out (high resistance, high reading on the gauge) Some senders work opposite of this, and the gauge function is just reversed.

So likely you would SEE 12v+ on the sender wire if you measured it with a VOM and the ignition on, but that is completely different than putting 12v+ to the sender terminal because there wouldnt be a "bulb" (the gauge) between, and you would cause a big short the sender, and likely cause a spark. In the tank. Great idea, right?
