I BD my 90 S10 3.5 traditional with a 4.3 and it looks like ill need to cut the hood out for the alternator and air cleaner. Yet i see tons of 4.3 1st gens BD to the rockers with stock hood and they didnt cut there hoods. Also i ditched my A/C and heater so i need to re-route and get a shorter belt. I noticed that my alternator has no belt tensioner adjustment on it. Ive been trying to see how the hell you adjust it. Any help would be awesome.
One more thing, if you lengthen your whole main wire harness. Will it fuck with any of then electronics? I heard some cars if you even mess with the length of the wire it will throw things off. Im thinking thats for newer cars though but i thought i would ask.
Thanks
I did one a few years back, we got the factory idler pulley to replace the A/C, got another idler pulley to replace the automatic belt tensioner. Then cut the bracket for the alternator so I could drop the alt. down a fair bit so it cleared the hood, made a pivot for the bottom and an adjustment bracket for the top to adjust belt tension. Then when to a performance shop and pickep up an open air cleaner housing that drops the air cleaner down around the throttle body.
That allowed us to keep the stock hood with a 3" body drop to lay pinch seam.
Dont worry about the wiring. I have no problems lengthing wires. Just make sure your battery is disconnected and its a good idea to unplug the ecm (computer) to.
i have run into another problem
my linkage for my auto shifter smacks my frame. I cut it and re welded it so it wont hit and thats fine but it still wont shift then i noticed that the steering shaft sleeve thing has kinda pulled out a little bit so it wont shift from park into the other gears...
has anyone run into this problem?
any other people had to deal with this?
I had the same problem with my shifter after a 4" BD. I just installed a floor shifter from Trans Am. Any floor shifter from a car with a 700r4 will work. Just make sure you get the linkage and shift lever off the transmission of the donor car.
i had to completely molest mine i think i ended up taking out like 4 or 5 inches and i still couldnt get all my gears i fooled with it until i could get p,r,n,and overdrive and left it at that. my steering did the same thing but i never had a problem with it

so you could still turn and everything but since it slipped out like in the picture it wouldnt allow you to shift right? Didnt affect the steering at all?
put in a washer behind the cotter pin. Common problem with keeping column shifter.
Doesnt affect steering...stays in gear position while the steering shaft moves inside.
Never had that problem and I have body dropped at least 5 automatic 1st gen s10s
