Looks good for starting man, if I had some pics of my 3rd time welding you guys would never stop laughing. Only thing I can say is clean it up a bit better before you go at it. As for the splatter good luck, thats the bad part about having the wire come out at a constant speed, I have never been able to get rid of the splatter compleetly, maybe someone can give some tips though.
You'll never completely get rid of splatted with solid wire. You can use dual core wire and there will be less but still some. Its also expensive as hell, and not recommended for anything under 1/8" thick.
Maybe just get some anti spatter spray and lay it on the area around where the weld will be. Won't fix the splatter, but its a lot easier to clean up.
I keep one of those large masonry chisels on top of my mig for knocking off spatter after welding. Most of it will come off without having to hit the chisel with a hammer, the masonry chisel is big so it already has some weight behind it. Hope this helps.

You ever notice that anti splatter spray smells like burnt fish when it gets hot? First time I used it I thought someone was cooking in the shop next door.
