what rear end is a couple inches narrower ? impala ss? older cadillac ? does anyone know

The '93-96 civilian caprice/ '94-'96 impala ss is narrower, can't recall EXACTLY by how much, but I want to say 2" roughly. The police package 9C1 and '91-92 caprice is 1.25" shorter than that.
Be aware that some caprices had a 7.5" center section, which you do not want. All 9c1 cars and 94-96 cars had the 8.5's while the previous cars had either or.
Make sure you get a 8.5" rear, which is the same center section (carrier, gears, etc) that is in your truck now... interchangeable at least.
Now, with the 8.5" rears you will find either 2 series or 3 series carriers... why is this important? Well, if you get a 2 series carrier you can only use gears up to 2:7something... The 3-series carrier will only accept gears above that, and up to around 4:56 or slightly higher.
