cleanning stainless steel?

i got a stainless steel gas tank and i want to pollish it up. actualy its a christmas present for my brother and i want it to shine!!!! how does everyone shine up there stainless stuff???this is how it sits as is... not too great lookin.

Go to Home Depot and get some polishing/cleaning compound for stainless (hard metals)and a buffing wheel and get to work

Hate to be the one to say this but your going to have to grind the flaws out of that tank then sand the grind marks then sand the sand marks then polish the sand marks.stainless is hard as a rock and shows everything.The easy way to do it would be to scotchbright sand the tank in a even pattern and make it look brushed.some people use steel wool.

ok well what about like a chrome pollish? i have the buffin wheel already. ill try that then if it dont work ill steel wool the tank. if i use the steel wool will it rust?? will i have to use something to protect it?

the tank isnt chrome. use weenol. thats the poo right there.

umm...stainless wont rust if you steel wool it. its stainless! theres only a couple of conditions that stainless will corrode. its not a coating or anything. the corrosion resistance is a materials property.

Steel wool is the best metal cleaner.

Scrub it down, then sand it with fine grit paper. It is going to take 10 times as long as normal steel.

alright so i guess ill just wash it than hit it hard with the steel wool! ill post up some pics tomorrow.

id start with a da sander to clean up the imperfections first.....then go finer and finer till you can buff it out.Lots of time though. I don't know if its just me but it looks a lot like aluminum???

yea to me that tank looks like aluminum also. if thats the pic to the tank you wanna clean up, your in for a lot of work, your best bet is painting it
