I know this question has been asked before, but I cant really find a good answer. I'm looking to maybe get a welder, not sure what I need. Will most likely be doing both body work and frame work/etc with it, mainly for doing restoration work stuff. Buying old trucks, working on them, selling them. That kind of thing. Any ideas on how powerful of a welder I need?
I love my Hobart Handler 180 220v. Good for sheetmetal and and framework
i got a lincoln 175 hd 220v welder and its awesome! i love it...if you get one i would recommend a 220. the 110 are a little small (some will argue that its not) for doing frame work like air suspension and what not. but the one i have works perfect for sheet as well as frame stuff. you can get a pretty sweet kit for 600-800 bucks depending on what you get. i think mine came with mine was a video, mask, regulator for the gas, two spools of wire (flux and regular) and a cart for the tank and welder to sit on for like 650.
Jeff sounds like you got a good deal on your lincoln .... I honestly cant remember the model # on my lincoln but its basically the largest 110 i seen and rated at 1/4" and i think it ran right at $600 and no cart either (but regulator and all that jazz) .... but overall i love my lincoln and it welds nice i think although im no master welder or nuttin and 90% of my work is sheetmetal usually but did use it to finish boxing in my frame and dropping my frame horns on the bodydrop and it did excellent ....all the actual bagwork/frame and notch was done by a friend and a killer miller 220V setup though
I got a Miller 175 for $650. I like it. Done plenty of heavy welding with it, and welded some thin ass 1980 sheetmetal no problem.

Ive got the same one, had it for years. LOVE it!
Get AT LEAST a 220v machine, youll be wanting more if you get a 110v.

My gas regulator is going out I think. I need to call Miller about it and see if they will replace it, since it should still be under warrantee.
the new hobart handler 187 is the bomb, better then the 180 because it has 7 voltage settings.
