In most cases, 9 times out of 10 the original designer will get screwed and a company will find a cheaper way to create the same product and the designer will get nothing out of it other than knowing they are the ones that started the production for that product reguardless if they see a dime for it!
Whenever I did my patent I included a new style of latch and a keyless touchpad for entry on a tonneau cover. At that time (2002) no one had ever used those in the way that I had them in my patent. Once I was patent pending I sent out my information to several companies and never heard anything back from most of them.
In 2004 I came across a company at Sema that was "introducing" the first ever tonneau cover with a keyless touchpad as means of entry! And even on their website it has word for word what my patent has written on how you can use the keypad with your factory door locks inside the cab to control it! And on their new style of latches it clearly states that "it latches like a trunk lid"!
I went up to the owner of the company and he was a complete jerk to me. I don't know if he knew who I was once I showed him what I had because I had sent my information directly to him personally and he kept saying all the these negative things how it wouldn't and couldn't work etc etc.
I've already seen several homemade versions of my design on people's trucks which is fine as long as they are not selling them because that would be infringement. My friend said "at least you had part in starting something new" yeah but I haven't seen a dime for it which was the whole point behind getting a patent!
not to bash u but u didnt have a part in makin something new (you may have patented it 1st) there were a few trucks back in 94-96 that had the same type of cover one was even featured in MT it was an orange ford ranger w/ ground fx.... once not bashin just tellin the history of the cover........

No I can't deny that there were some covers before my patent, however I was not into trucks when they came out (i was 12 years old) and I had never seen any until I started my website because everyone told me about that ranger and I was also sent a picture of it. I don't claim to be the first one to ever create one but I do claim to be the first one to ever patent one. I know that for a fact because of patent records.
The only difference since I came along with mine is I have something to back it up as far as production goes. My design features were stolen after I submitted them to companies. Although it's probably the same thing with the tubs, it might have been out already but not everyone see's everything until it's made public. I have a friend that has a custom paint job on his truck and he saw another truck with some of the same paint design and he said "huh, i wonder where he got that idea?" So I thought, huh I don't know, where did you get the idea for the bodydrop, just happen to think of that one day?
I took no offense on the "bashing", i'm well aware of the ones before me

I'm gonna disagree with that one. We use SD tubs all the time at the shop. They come basically ready for paint. When you factor in the time to cut side panels, weld, metalfinish and bodywork trailer fenders to get the same look, its really worth it to buy SD tubs. I was skeptical at first too, but they really are a worthwhile product.
As for the guy who got his idea 'stolen', yeah its too bad, but you know you were the first so I guess just make the best of it and take it as a compliment is pretty much all you can do.

I understand where you are coming from, I have a few product idesa that as far as i know are orignal. the biggest problem is i am afraid that if i go to a company that can handle the production, there is nothing stopping them from stealing the idea and marketing it themselves. this is why i am teaching myself how to produce them myself , so i don't have to worry about it. on the flipside, i have just started producing "cornhole" boards, which was someone else's idea.

we didnt copy your design. i promise. ive never even seen your truck before that i can remember. we are actually designing a couple different wheel tubs. one with a double teardrop shape. im sorry you feel robbed but i promise your truck did not influence this tub design. its a coincidence. you just happen to obviously be the first one with it.
