is my brake booster bad

It is possible i put that rod in backwards or it wasn't supposed to come out at all but im not sure if that would cause me to have very little brakes with the motor running and the fact that the motor runs much smoother without the vacuum line hooked up. Im at a loss here guys. Ive got to have this thing running my early friday morning It also has a mild cam in it 274 lift 450 duration. I dont think that is "stealing" enough vacuum to cause all this but any insight is greatly appreciated.
Also to the SSM staff my membership ran out and I ran out of posts this month so I tried to renew by papyal and paypal tells me this merchant isn't accepting payments or something like that? Please fix it so I can renew.
