you need to first remove the fumes, you can blow up if you weld on a gastank... there have been many rednecks that lost their lives this way... you can have a radiator shop boil it, or you can do the way i did, i let it sit for about 3 days filled with soapy water, refilling it like twice a day, then before i did anything to it i let the water hose run it in it for about 30 min. it was good to go after that.... if you dont think you will die visit some welding forums and listen to all the stories of people getting injured and killed from welding on barrels and gas tanks....

after you get done cleaning the tank properly... I would fill up the inside of the tank with argon or argon mix... and keep it flowing inside the tank while you are welding on the outside...

the way my dad told me to do it is hook up the exhaust from a car or truck to it and pump it in the tank while welding. other ways wil work to. im sure there could be a place that will patch it.
