You can use speaker wire (16-18ga), or primary wire (16-18ga), both will work. What I usually do is run primary. I take and cut all my lengths, and then clamp one end of two pieces in my vise, and the other in my drill and make a twisted pair. But I have used both, and they both work just fine.

i used speaker wire as well, makes for a cleaner/more simpler wiring setup.

Home Depot sells killer wire- 18/4 Sound and Security cable. It has 4 18 gauge (stranded) wires in a single jacket, and is shielded to boot!
You can run one length all the way to the back, then just strip the insulation to go out to each valve assembly from there. I think if you buy 100' it's only like $.26/ foot.
But yes, speaker wire will work, too- it just looks kind of cheesy.
