is 1/4 steel overkill

i am going to make new brakets for my rear bags this weekend, and was wondering if 1/4 over kill and if 3/16 will be sufficient for the rear brackets....

I think you would be fine with 1/4

Either way I'd say gusset or reinforce anything, and with that.. usually 3/16" is plenty, but if you happen to have 1/4" go for it and overkill's not always a bad thing.

i do 1/4 for all my bag mounts

when working with suspension there is no such thing as over kill because thats something you need.

i dont see the need to use 1/4 inch but hey if your welder can burn it and u wanna use it..go right ahead

it will break off and kill you, use 5/16".

I think its best to use the metal close to the thickness that you will be welding too..example; 3/16 frame..use 3/16 metal for brackets..but thats just me..

im not sure if that will work all the time, cuz mazda frames are like 1/8 if that, i know ide want more metal holdin my truck up then that, but i get what your sayin tho

Yea, Toyota frames are 11 guage, and I'm sure most other import frames are the same. But I used 1/4" for everything. And anywhere I welded anythign to my frame, I plated with a much larger piece of 1/4" plate to strengthen it all.

Everything I do is overkill.
