So what can I do exactly to remove the texture from my block? I've heard of a few things but I want to know what really works and what tools I will need to do it. Also, where can I get high temp paints other than the ones you see at the local auto parts store?

hand linisher, die grinder, dremel etc.
Normal 2 pac paint is good for the job.

on my toyota i used a die grinder for all the small areas , but for the most part, just used aircraft stripper to get it to metal, lots of scraping, sanding, scuffing, its all about the prep to get it to stick man....

I completely smoothed the blocks on my last 2 projects, and yes its lots of time consuming work. You start by grinding the block as smooth as you can. I used a 3'' angle grinder, then used normal die grinder with in the tight spots, eastwood sells grinding tips that are round for this sort of job. I then primed the block with Dupont Dp90 metal etching primer. Then i sprayed Evercoat Slick Sand high build filler primer on the engine, then started sanding with 120 grit and worked my way up to 320. My final step was to seal the block, then i based it, then cleared it. I have done numerous engines this way and have NEVER had any problem with adhesion or durability. A engine does get hot, but not hot enough to destroy a properly prepared block sprayed with a modern urethane type paint. I hope this helps you. Goodluck with your engine, it is alot of work but well worth it in the end.
