Well folks, my girlfriend bought a toyota FJ cruiser today and I read that it takes preium gas only. With all the gas hikes, what would happen if we put the cheap stuff in. Its not a performance motor. Same motor as a V6 taco... I have heard everything from nothing will happen to it will blow the motor and void warranty... But I am asking for all you car/truck peoples help.. So, what do you think I should do?? Let me add, I we live in south OC, so high octane is now 3.37 where I live.. Please advise..Thanks

its definately not good for the motor, not sure about it blowing the motor but if the motor has been set to run with higher octane then you should probly run the higher octane fuel.

Run the lowest octane that doesnt ping. Pinging sounds like rattling under load or acceleration. There is a lot of talk about premium increasing performance, cleaning the injectors and removing deposits, and making an engine run smoother. Its all poop.

"premium" gas is just higher octane. Octane SLOWS the burn of combustion, allowing more ignition advance. If you drive an older vehicle that doesnt require premium gas (if it does, it will say so EVERYEHERE, manual, inside the gas cap, on the fuel gauge) and without a knock sensor, you are wasting your money. The slowed combustion will actually run cooler and inhibit efficiency (less power) because you arent advancing the ignition to take advantage of the slower burn. If you twist the dizzy for more advance, you can run premium and see a power increase, but there are no cleaning benefits from octane. The 87 will clean as effectively as the 91.

If you DO have a knock sensor, your engine will adjust the timing for you BUT, unless your engine specifically calls for premium, the max advance will usually be set at a safe limit for 87, not 91. Again, no benefits.

I had a car that required premium 91, said it all over. I was able to run mid grade 89 though because it didnt ping. 87 pinged on accel.

Run a tank of 89, if it doesnt ping, run a tank of 87. If it pings on 89, you better stick to premium.

Id just go ahead and run premium ... Ive got a 99 Mustang and its just v6 ...For the first year or so i ran regular gas cause it was cheap and it didnt say to run premium i dont think (then again i was a cheap bastard and prolly ignored if it did say it lol) ....but it didnt ping till like a year later ....now if i put the slightest drop of anything but premium in it... it pings like a bitch bigtime bad .... So just run premium and in the long run you'll save yourself from having to worry any at all

you can alwasy have it tuned for the lower octane, i know a few people with 350Z's which call for premium and they had theres retuned to run 87

what days are these when men cant decide the type of gas to use in their vehicle. does that sadden anyone but me? i mean, gees. furthermore, all gas is a freakin 10" salami in the pooper, so f**k it run 93, its only 20 cents higher than the regular....even if you have a 30 gal tank, its only 6.00 more.

my mom has a 1.8t jetta and its supposed to only run on premium. my sis didnt now that and always filled it with regular now it stalls out while your driving shuts off while driving 10000000000000000000 different lights come on while driving the damn thing beeps more than a pager (i went way back for that one) we can run 89 in it and it only lessens all that shit but when we run premium it runs like a champ. but yeah premium aint that much more expensive but then again i buy my gas on a military base now
