There is a difference, the light grey(yellow top) is a combo regular and deep cycle battery which is better for cars w/ big stereos. Dark grey(Red Top) is good for normal use as it is only a regular cycle battery. Blue tops are marine, so they are deep cycle only, not good for cars cause deep cycles are meant to be drained down....i got all that from Optima's website...go there and they will have a better answer to your question
Right now I'm running a Viair 450 and an Nautilus regulay battery, and after storage, it's totally dead. So I'm looking into the Optimas. Im planning on running two 450's, I have a beefed up alternator (150 amps)so I'm not too worried about runnin the compressors with the truck off, it's more keepin the juice so it'll crank over no prob... So stay away from the blue, and lean more to the red or yellow?
I meant while the truck is on, not off...
yellow top is the way to go i have one
if you care about a warranty then you won't want to be starting your ride with a yellow top as it voids the warranty.
Putting an optima battery to start a truck can not be an excuse for an auto manufacturer to void the warrenty. The only way they could void the warrenty is if the dealer could prove that the optima caused the part you are trying to get replced under warrenty failed. This is covered by the Manusson Moss warrenty act.
i have had a yellow top in my toyota for 9 monthes without it being started one time and it still has juice and holds a full charge,.
I have a had a red top in my truck for four years now with no problems. I have two amps constantly pulling juice, and listen to the stereo with the truck turned off alot. the next battery i buy will be a yellow top because i now have a daily driver...so it will be sitting in the garage most of the time
I guess I had bad luck with my red top then. I had a red top and used it to run 2 viar 450's, and 2 mtx amps. All of this with a 200 amp alternator. I let my truck sit a lot admittidly, but the optima wouldn't hold a charge for shit. I tried to carry it back for warranty, but had lost the receipt, and of course the parts store could find no record of my 120.00 battery purchase( even though they enter all that useless info in the computer, and can still see were I bought a radiator eight years ago...).
Went to wally world, bought a 45 dollar battery, and never had another problem, even with the truck sitting.
Moral of the story, Fuck Optima
Buy one Sears, no problems, Had my Yellow Top for 3 years now,140 amp output! Also Sears will check your charing system for free!!
