How thick would you say that metal needs to be to be able to weld solid and not have to worry much about warping? I welded to a piece of 1x2 with 14 gauge walls and that thing warped like a banana!
to much heat!!! i have ran long beads on 16G with no warping
you can pretty much warp any piece of metal. depends on what is being welded, settings on the welder, etc, etc etc.
i like banana's... all metal will warp
got to take your time tackin that crap up. iv been over it a million times but yet yesterday i did it again and warped another bed pannel on the bed floor im doing
Yea, That's what I am working on, the bed. I am rebuilding my back wall first. I put the 1x2 along the top then welded the sheet metal to the 1x2. I figured the sheet was warped but when I started cutting it out to replace it I noticed the 1x2 taking the banana effect. HA HA. I was pissed at first but I have welded many times and know that metal warps, stupid mistake. The funny thing is the sheet metal wasn't warped at all. I focused most of the weld on the 1x2 but I never in a million years would have thought one bead could warp the entire tube like that.
Here's the piece that is junk now. The middle part of it warped pushing it down toward the bed floor. That caused to sheet metal to bend a bit but one I cut the top piece out the sheet was fine.
It's possible the 1x2 was bent from the get go.

No, it wasn't. I cut the sheet metal just under the 1x2 after I noticed the problems. The sawzall blade kept binding then once I finished the cut the instead of being a gap the size of a sawzall blade the metal actually overlapped by about 3/8".
That was alot of warping to make it expand that much. I think there was another factor there that is being overlooked I dont think it was all due to warping.
What are you thinking? I'd have to agree with you. The reason I welded it solid was because the tacks weren't penetrating. I tacked it on then took the sawzall to trim the excess off and the tacks were breaking off of the 1x2. I am just wondering if maybe something was on the metal that would maybe effect them welding.
