It's called "clocking" when you are trying to locate something on a circle and match it.
Looking from the side of the rear end, set your pinion at 0 degrees and axle level. Get a level (bubble is fine) and a square. Measure the diameter of the axle tube and divide it in half. Now set the level on the axle tube with your square and mark the tube at the measurement you took (half the OD of axle tube) After you repeat this to the other side, you will have "clocked" your axle. Mark a center line on your tabs and set them on the marks. You can accurately position your tabs either on the marks or offset the same from the reference marks.
