I've always heard it was just due to the wind ripping them back (and pulling you out if you held on) if you opened them while driving in the old days... any "new" suicides done by the factory has to have the front door open first to open the back as a safety precaution.

OR WHEN A CAR WITH SUICIDE DOORS IS IN AN ACCIDENT IT JAMS THE LATCH AND MAKES IT IMPOSSIBLE TO OPEN. ALSO, HOW IS IT EASIER TO JUMP OUT A CAR WITH SUICIDE DOORS????I CAN FALL OUT OF A REGULAR VEHICLE JSUT FIEN WITH THE DOOR IN FRONT OF ME..AH WELL

you are all correct. i had to take an automotive culture class and this was the topic of our discussion for a few days. the professor had mentioned all of those reasons to us.

I think all these reasons are fair but cannot resist the urge to add my .02 on the topic. Many of these answers are mostly correct though not nessicarily for the correct reason.

A "normal" door if opened while driving will try to close on its own... quite sane

A "suicide" door if opened while moving will RIP THE FK OFF and thus will be deemed quite suicidal

NOTE 2 SELF. If wind is heard in kustom kruzer do not attempt to "check tha door" LoL

I always thought they were named that due to the fact that they could blow open on the road easy and you could fall out. Thats why some of them had the safety straps on them.

\Have to give it to this guy. if the wind catches one of those doors and your holding on... your gone Thats what I was told for a reason and what I tell everyone. I did suicides on a s10 a few years back and the idiot disregarded my warnings and opened the door on the mackinaw bridge. Luckily he didnt hold on to it, the door whipped open a full 180 doing some damage to the cab, door and bedside

Suicide doors made exiting a car from the back seat very easy, so it was a good sales point for buyers. Unfortunately, it also made exiting the car at high speeds easy too. If a door came unlatched, because it was hinged at the back the air moving past the car flung the door open, and passengers often fell out. In crashes the door latches tended to fail, and the backseat passenger would fly out of the vehicle. Hence, the nickname.

thats from another website but ive always heard that it was because you can get pulled out if opened at speed and you can get trounced if in an accident.
