I'm not sure if there's a specific way but, I can say how they work...

The belt retractor has a pendulum in it that swings when you move suddenly and locks the mechanism that lets the belt extend. It may be possible that the pendulum inside got bent in a hard crash but it's hard to say.

my best guess would be to make sure the belt retractor is in the normal upright position (cuz that's the only position it will allow the belt to release, other positions make the pendulum swing and lock up) and then whack on that seat belt retractor to see if it will free up?

Packy is right.. Most of the time they lock up and can not be released. Best bet is the find a salvage yard close by that has not had the airbags blown and purchase their seatbelts.

yes they have a catch in them to make tehm lock and unusuable once so much force is appliyed. also if u take it out and turn it up side down it will do the same thing to.

IM WITH THEM ^^^^^^
YOU HAVE TO REPLACE THEM , YOU ALSO HAVE TO CHANGE YOUR AIR BAG MOD. IN SOME CASES THE SEAT BELT BEING LOCKED WILL THROUGH UP A AIRBAG LIGHT ON YOUR DASH !

yes insurance companies are requierd to estimate replacing the seat belt, air bag module, air bag, and sensors if the air bags deployed. if u dont do this and fix it and for some reason the insurance company wants to look at it, theyll get pretty mad lol.

i used to rebuild totalled/salvage cars for a shop awhile back and most of the newer cars and trucks have small chrges in the seatbelt tensioners to draw up the slack in case of an impact...they lock and are permanently disabled so buying new ones is your only choice or go to a slavage yard...they aren't that bad price wise and the airbag shouldn't be to awful expensive either...usually around 350-600 depending and the belts shouldn't be but about 100-200 each!
