Man what a can of worms you just opened! I JUST got my BD and bagged Nissan back after having it at TWO different shops for almost THREE YEARS. The first shop who was doing good work at a very fair, almost too cheap price, had the truck for about a year and nine months. They had the same excuses...I'm doing someone else's work or I'm fixing someone's bodywork so yours gets pushed back. I'm very patient but come on dude! Luckily I only put down about $1000 to start the work. After I picked it up (and what pieces they could find) I took it to another shop who had it another year. SO a contract is not out of the question and a time frame (be generous) is also not unreasonable.
The problem with custom work is shops don't seem to set deadlines which they stick to and can't compete with backyard fabricators who don't have the overhead to drive their prices up. I have paint contract all the time with deadlines and specifics so EVERYONE knows what to expect and there's no chance of miscommunication. And yes I get annoyed with people who call constantly to see "how it's comming along".
Bottom line

yeah he's still around. a while back he closed his shop up and went underground, doing it out of his house. only the customers that still deal with him knew where to find him. lately he's gotten into building older cars, restoring them, and doing the suspensions for those. as a matter of fact his blown, bagged, bodydropped oldsmobile rocket 88 was just featured in built to rail magazine.

when you're looking for a shop, don't listen to what they can do, look at what they have done. Anyone can tell you that there the best, but very few can prove it.
don't just look at the nice finished, layed out pics, ask to see the progress pics. its easy to hide a hackjob under a clean body.
talk with previous customer, see what they thought, not just about the work, but the customer service as well.
