Every so often, I come across a part of Street Source that reminds me just how long this site has been around — and how much the web has changed since the early 2000s. The Calculators feature was one of those reminders.
Back then, it felt like a cool idea. Mini-truckers and custom builders could come here, punch in a few numbers, and figure out their suspension travel, wheel backspacing, or gear ratios. It was simple and useful — the kind of thing that made Street Source more than just a photo gallery or message board. It was a tool, built by someone who loved the scene and wanted to make life a little easier for people in the garage.
But like a lot of older features, the calculators eventually fell behind. The code was old, the math formulas were scattered across PHP files, and the layout hadn’t been touched since the days of table-based design. Every time I looked at it, I thought about fixing it up, maybe giving it a fresh UI or combining it with the Wiki or Rides sections.
And then I finally asked myself: Do people still need this here?
Today, there are hundreds of modern tools, apps, and even AI assistants that can calculate just about anything faster and better. Rebuilding this feature didn’t really align with where Street Source is headed. So rather than keep another piece of outdated code hanging around, I decided to remove it.
It’s always bittersweet — like clearing out old parts from the garage. You remember the history, but you also know you can’t build something new without letting go of what’s no longer useful.
The goal now is clarity — fewer half-finished features, cleaner code, and a platform that reflects the story I actually want to tell. Street Source is evolving into something focused, fast, and meaningful.
So goodbye, Calculators. You had a good run.
