She is a beauty. I've had 10...not certs but 10 bugs...and a bus....I miss the bus the most.

Currently I have an invader GT kit sitting on a 69 chassis. Its a project at this point but its getting a 1.8 type 4 motor....someday if I ever get her put back together.

My wife hates it which gives me motivation.

I noticed that in your rocker arm cover photo there was no baffle inside. mine has a factory sheetmetal baffle inside. did you take it off before you took the picture or did you not have one on yours?

I took the baffle off so I could replace the gasket underneath it; the gasket was in the Fel-Pro head gasket kit. So photo was just while it was temporarily removed for cleaning.

I was just wondering. I used a small amount of black RTV as a gasket for mine I because that was what was on there when I took it apart. lol hope that doesn't come back to bite me later.

I think that would be fine. You'll be looking at that when you re-check the head bolt torque anyway !!!

very cool you make this look very damn easy, gives me hope that perhaps i can pull this off in the future as well. ive replaced water pumps, fuel pumps, radiators, rack and pinion, various gaskets and other things over the years. ive been told pretty much just jump in and do it is the best way to learn engine rebuilds.

How did you get the piston rod pins out on your old pistons?

Update, November 2014:

I did install rear leaf spring bushings, really needed those, covered that in a different thread. I also last month installed a brand-new Sanden 708 Model 7225 AC compressor, as the rebuilt one I installed in 2003 seized in early October.

The engine itself still looks pretty good 3 years later, especially since I'm not known for my cleaning-up skills.

Here's a little valve cover vent I've been using the past year, from O'Reilly.

Since I have a Weber carb, here's what I use to block off the heat shield over the exhaust manifold. I used lug nuts from O'Reilly to cap the threaded ports no longer of use.

Here's my home-made EGR block-off plate. "Next time" I'll include an "ear" with a hole for the throttle return spring. The dark stuff is dried Permatex Aviation sealer.

Here's how I have my canister hooked up: from carb and back to the fuel tank area, others capped off.

Here's how I hooked up my aftermarket cruise control cable (had attached easier onto stock carb)
