What about flipping the lower so that it points up instead of down? Any benifit to that or not?

Good tech article...the only thing that should be different is the use of new bolts....

well on my old 87, my new 89, and my buddies 88, the upper ball joint came in from under the upper arm and the bolts went through the arm into the ball joint. ive never seen the arm sandwiched between the balljoint and the spindle.

thats cause there flipped .... the balljoint goes from the bottom side of the upper control arm to the top side of the upper arm you dont literally flip the ball joint

It looks like you did the work on a concrete cinder block. Lucky for you it didn't break. They fracture without warning, allowing the unsupported load to crush anything (including human body parts) in their path. You might have gotten a good result with what you did, but I hope the moderator of this site will remove your images, because it is obvious you don't know much about working safely.

The picture will not be removed, at least not for now....BUT LETS BE CLEAR ABOUT SAFETY HERE.....THE ONLY SAFE WAY TO WORK ON A VEHICLE IS SECURELY POSITIONED ON A SUITABLE STABLE PLATFORM IE JACKSTANDS. a JACK IS NOT SUITABLE FOR THIS PURPOSE, AND NEITHER IS A CINDER BLOCK, ROCK, OR YOU SISTERS MAKEUP CASE.

And grade 8 bolts should not be used as they are not metric. metric high grade bolts grade 12 I think are the ones you want.

I don't think the taper in the spindle would allow for that reorientation.
