Starting to build door panels

When you begin the layout for door panels, if you dont want to use the existing panel itself, how do you go about attaching it to your door? I thought about using a 1/16" piece of steel for the panel and drilling it to hold the pushpin things and then glassing over all that. But, how does everyone else do it?
