98-up S-10 bumpers on a 97 S-10

Who has changed bumpers on their S-10's to a 98-up? I was wondering how do you get the side marker to work when you discard the bumper lights? I took my bulb out of the bumper light and the side marker wouldn't work on parking lights but it would on signal. So what should I do when I change the bumper?
