highspeed hesitation?

my '81 720 started having some trouble when im driving, all of a sudden it will go like half a mile, then it will hesitate and then die. i guess it possibly could be the fuel filter or carb, but it seems that when it dies, i go and unplug the + wire off the battery, then hook it back up, then the truck cranks up. same thing over and over. any suggestions?
