Being the cautious fellow that I am, I started this process at what could be looked at as the "beginning" - I dismantled the intake from the air cleaner to the fuel injector/throttle body thing. In taking off that black metal tube thing with the large vacuum line coming off of it, I notice that is was kind of dirty so I threw it into the kitchen sink (literally) and washed it thoroughly. Then I stuck my head into the throttle body (figuratively) and noticed that the butterfly valve was a little grimey, so I sprayed Berrymans Carb/Throttle body cleaner ($4 at Autozone) into it and threw a toothbrush in there as well and scrubbed around inside gently as to not break off any internal stuff and the toothbrush came out black at pitch. I then repeated the process a few times, reassembled, fired it up and after the Berrymans caused a little combustion of it's own, the idle was smooth as a babies ass. I also have replaced the lion's share of vacuum lines (one at a time of course) and plan on replacing the rest to ensure the proper amount of vaccum. I will time it also however - just to make sure things are tip-top.
Off topic, this website is a gold mine of information that just doesn't exist to a person who doesn't know about these trucks, thanks a million and if you are ever in the San Antonio area - I owe you a beer.
Glad you got it. Stay with it. These are some of the best trucks ever built. Later.
really glad to hear you got everything fixed on it...i didnt even realize youre in san antonio, i live way up from ya in east texas in a town called grand saline. i was working for a company called tessco and for alittle bit i drove through S.A. goin to a town called castroville out there off 90 i think it was. stayed in a hotel in hondo
How do I find the timing mark? I messed around with rotating the distributer cap, now I have that lovely "chatter" when the engine is under load going up a hill. The truck is a 92 2wd max... anyhoo, I am going to try to turn it back the other way (not that I moved it too much in the first place).
as usual, all assistance is appreciated.
