. . .B2200 RF diesel engine . . .

Diesel engines don't use a spark trigger to light off the mixture.

So there is no distributor . .

. . . or coil . . .

. . .there is no signal that a tachometer can monitor.

The only place I think you can put a tachometer for a diesel . . .

. . . is on Ebay.

Someone with a gas engine might be able to use it.

Lots of diesel's have tachs...
Not sure on the mazdas tho.

I believe autometer makes one runs off the alternator?
I haven't searched for it, saw someone talking about it on another forum
or one that has a "set screw" that can be changed

get ur mazda, clean it up real good, put it on ebay,

when it sells go out and buy a honda or some ricer and screw the tacho to the dash

why do u want a tacho in ur diesel minitruck?

you either need a hal-effect switch like some diesels use, or autometers #2888 inductive pick up for the alt. at $110

on the bright side the pump should keep it governed so it can't over rev

The best way on a diesel to ascertain shift ponts is via seat-of-the pants.

When it stops pulling, shift.

Academically, it may be possible to put a tach on anything, using *work*a*rounds*.

Just like it is possible to put a cruise control on one.

But the RPM (pulsed) signal isn't there, as a trigger.

I think that was what the poster of the thread was noticing.

So you have to tape magnets to the driveshaft, or find another source of signal to monitor.

There are hand held tachs that are used to set things on small engines. I think they use a photoresistive tape that gets glued to the flywheel. then the gun picks it up. If you are trying to set an idle speed, that might be an option. Use the harmonic balancer and stick the tape on there.

For the ford escorts there is a sensor on the IP that sends a signal to the tachometer. Since it is a 4 cylinder it is possible (in theory) to wire this sensor into the Mazda factory tach. 84-87 Escorts, 626, topaz, and lynx diesels all had tachs from the factory. Here is a pic of the sensor on the RF IP that I am using in my diesel build:

I'm still working out a lot of bugs in my setup and don't have it running as of yet but if I figure out how to use it then I'll share my answers with y'all.
