so any new ideas or thoughts or opportunities?

I picked up the truck and airbrake handbooks from the DMV yesterday, and called one of the driving schools the other day. I need to go for a medical and an interview at the school before they enroll me if I choose to go. I'm hoping maybe I can start around christmas. Got too many bills to pay off right now to leave my job.

its up to you what you do... but if it was me i wouldn't want to do either... have you seen the tv show rookies on a&e on tuesday nights? well you should watch it. imo cops don't get paid enough for the risk they take. your life is on the line every min of the day even when your off duty. as far as the trucking, its just as dangerous, you see every day about a tractor trailer running off the road or flipping over. your young man no need to rush into anything, especially something so dangerous, trust me your not going to like doing either job once you find out how tough and dangerous they are.

there is a point where reward outweighs risk, but imo, that reward is only for jobs like police, fire and paramedic.

Trucking has no reward over risk, other than making it home each night. Most truck accidents are caused by tired or distracted drivers though.

I am hoping to go through with the truck schooling, but I do not want to drive rigs. The licence I will be going for will not permit me to drive tractor trailers, but will let me drive air brake equipped straight trucks, cement, dump and garbage trucks, plows, flatbed tow trucks etc.

My dad's been a trucker for over 20 years. I wouldn't say he loves his job,but he does enjoy it because every day is different and you're not stuck in the same place all day every day. You get to travel around to different places and you're out and about. You never know what you're going to encounter,so even in a job that seems and mundane as trucking, there is the element of adventure.

I think I would enjoy it. I mean,I love driving,I love travelling, and what's better than getting paid to sit on your ass all day and drive around? Sounds good to me!

well back to the firefighting thing. its both fun, and hard. you will have your days where you're slumped with car wrecks, medical calls, and fires, and then you'll have your days where you dont do anything except hang out at the station all day. training is usually tough and long, i remember doing 12 hours training days in full gear. but the reward of knowing you just saved someones life, or someones house or anything, makes it all worth it. it can also be pretty hard to become a paid firefighter though, i know where i am you most likely wont get it unless you go the fire college, because of all the certifications you have to have. goodluck on whatever you choose though, let me know if you have anymore specific questions about it.

When I was young,my dad used to deliver Leer truck caps from Winnipeg Manitoba out to Newfoundland. He only used to be gone for no longer than 4-5 days at a time. He told me he used to love that job.

In the past 8-10 years,he used to just to trucking all around southern Ontario, mostly in Toronto and surrounding cities. He said in the last few years, with ever increasing traffic and stupidity out there,it's getting more and more dangerous than it's ever been. He has been in several accidents, all caused by other idiots.

He told me of one,on a snowy day when some idiot cut him off,but clipped his front bumper as they cut infront of him and spun out infront of his truck. He had nowhere to go and just hit the brakes and ended up crushing half the car. Luckily, the person in the car walked away, but stuff like that happens every day around the country.

Here in Ontario, the 400 Highway, which runs North/South between Toronto and Barrie (about a 75 mile corridor),right now is the most dangerous highway in Canada. It is a commuter route, and the route everyone from the city used to escape north to cottage country for the weekend. Day after day, weekend after weekend, all we ever see on the news is "car crash this, street racing driver caught that etc etc."

One of the most well known stories in the last couple of years is about a truck driver who used evasive action and ended up taking his own life to save several others, due to some of the most ignorant, waste of life, ass headed street racers ever to grace the earth. These two idiots were racing up the highway over 100mph,in mid day heavy traffic. They had ended up cutting this truck off,and they had caused another car and themselves to crash,so the driver of the truck had to make an emergency manouvre to avoid what would have been an even worse collion than what actually occured. He opted to go for the shoulder at full speed around 50-60mph and avoided hitting other cars, but plowed his rig straight into the ditch, rolling over and killing him.

Because of the severity and publicity of this accident, the anti street racing law was implemented, which is described as "any vehicle travelling 50kmh over any posted speedlimit". If you are caught going 50 over, your vehicle is automatically seized and impounded by police for 7 days, your licence is suspended for 7 days and you have to take a driver rehabilitation course, and you face fines up to a maximum of $10 000.

All this because of one major accident. All this because one good man,who was good at his job, went to work one day just like every other, and never made it home because of the risk/reward factor. He risked his life, making an intelligent split second decsion, which spared several lives but took his own in the end. There was absolutely no need for what happened that day, but as a trucker, that's all in a day's work.

Sorry for the novel. What chapter was I on?

Since that law was implemented in 2006, I think near 10 000 people have been charged. People just don't get it.
