f 150 rear axle ?

Ok so i have been thinking since the passenger axle is 31 3/4 " and driver side is 34 31/32" both are 31 spline. could I buy a new passenger axle and replace the driver axle with it to shorten the axle after cutting the housing down of course. will this work? if not why? I have been getting things ready to work on my truck but was wondering if this will give me my 3" I need to clear my wheels.

I did the same on my ranger never had a problem with it.
