I've been researching this a bit lately. From what I understand, if you rob all of the smog equipment from a vehicle that is the same year or newer than your vehicle you can have it refereed. So if your truck is already EFI, you have to stick with that. Also, from what I understand you pretty much have to blow the referee, because they are picky. But I have heard of people passing inspection pretty easily too, so it might depend on the day, or your attitude, or the cleanliness of the swap, etc.

Wiring wise, it would probably be easiest to get an engine harness from Painless. Or get a universal EFI harness from someone like Painless, EZ Wire, Ron Harris, or Rebel Wire. Most of them make 20 circuit stand alone harnesses.

A 4.6 swap depending on the engine would be a PITA. A 5.0 would have Painless wiring to factory computer. As it is a 91 you have more options, go for the Mustang 5.0 and you will be much happier with options then a 4.6 ask me how I know good luck man.

Their stuff is a lot cheaper than Painless or Ron Harris, and honestly it's pretty nice. I've got a Rebel Wire kit for my truck sitting in a box, and a Painless kit going in a 64 Comet, and the only difference I see is the way they are labeled.

Are you talking about the 4.6 Mod motor Fester? Or does Ford make a standard 4.6? A Mod motor would be massive and probably not fit..

Painless makes engine specific harnesses. My friend put an Iroc motor in his 86 Chevy, wired it in a weekend with a Painless Engine Harness.

Yeah the mod motor is a pita to fit and wiring on a 16 valve is a pain. I had a engine out of a 16 valve and getting it wired would have been a pain. I have a Painless kit for the 5.0 and hope it will be much easier. At least a kit is made for it. Time will tell.
