i've been working on my brothers olds cutlass. he bought a running 468 race motor for a hell of a deal & we got it in the car but i had to modify the drivers side header to clear some stuff but he is considering powder coating the headers, and i am suggesting the black header wrap to keep the engine and underhood temps down. he wants the powder coat but i dont think its going to do near as much heat control. and will basic powder coat heatup and chip like paint if its not a high temp? sorry theres so much to read.

THOUGHTS???

For headers you need high temp powdercoat. It comes in semigloss black and silver as far as I know. Last time I did it there where two silvers to choose from. It does add some heat protection, but not much. From what I hear ceramic coating does a better job. But either one you can use that heat wrap over the top of to further insulate heat.

i had some stuff ceramic coated on my old ss camaro back in the late 90s! it was very very pricey! but it helped tone down the heat a bit. i ended up using tape even over that because it kept burning through my damn plug wires. (LS1 engine suck w/ headers! i think i had a friend tell me that eastwood makes an inexpensive high-temp coating.

Header wrap does a great job of keeping moisture trapped in the headers along with heat.... So if the ehaders are mild steel, they will over time rust up. I would reccomend cermic coating them, and perhaps making some stainless heatshields.

Straight powdercoat will not work you need something like a high heat type of coating.I would recomend getting them ceramic coated they will not chip and it will reduce the temp under the hood of the car by a few degree's.It is a little pricey if you get them done after they have had the paint burn off them because they have to blast all the rust and scale off then coat them. The next best thing would be to buy new headers with the ceramic coat on them my edlebrock one are awsome.

Ceramic coating is the way to go,will cut the heat temp. a lot. Check around ,I found a hot rodder out here that as good prices & great work,he coats the inside as well as the out side, had from the headers to tips & muffler, cat,& all heat guards done!

I haven't seen ceramic coating any more expensive then powdercoating, and most shops have plenty of colors, my exhaust stacks a ceramic coated jet black, look great.
