Need help: Trademark

I know this is off-topic, but I have a name I want to trademark. I do not intend to make any profit from this, and do not want to spend anything to aquire the trademark. I simply do not want anyone to use/abuse this name. I figured that since there are a lot of business owners and "inventors" on here, someone might know how to do this. I have heard that you can simply send yourself a certified letter containing the name and date and keep it sealed in case of someone else attempting to use it. Is this true? Thanks, Rob

If you go to your local gov. building or wherever your DMV is they can point you in the right direction because they deal with business licenses too..

But I don't understand if you are not going to use the name, why can't anyone else?

I am going to use the name, I'm just not making anything off of it. thanks for the info, I'll try that.
