Trailer Brakes Locking Up???

Ok just looking for a little info on what could possibly be wrong or what to do. I have a 2000 Ford F250 and a 24' enclosed trailer. Everytime I hook the trailer up to the light and brake connection on the back of the truck the trailer brakes lock up. The truck has the factory tow package.

its the 7way spade connectorm im sure, electric brakes get their signal from a brake controller telling them when to break, something must be fucked between the brake controller and the connector, because its sending the brake signal to the trailer so, i would checkl everything in between, do it thoroughly, youd hate to have a trailer start malfunctioning on the freeway at 55.

If may have something to do with the safe brake away. I know when I reworked my trailer I had to get a new safety switch. They told me if it is not hucked up right the brake may lock up. But I

yeah even if you have a tow package you still will need a controller....it should be prewired so there for plug and play with the right adapter. I just ordered the prodigy that was highly recommended on a Titan forum in the tow section. RVWholesalers.com was the controlers and adapters. With the Nissan the prewire is just under the dash next to steering column dunno about yours though wouldn't think it would be far from there.

Yeah I have a trailer brake controller. I am starting to wonder if it is the break away switch on the trailer now because everything on the truck side is factory. Factory wiring from under the dash to the rear hitch and the trailer brake controller plugs in dirrectly from the controller into a plug under the dash for the controller. I guess possibly the breaks could lock up maybe if my battery is dead on the brake away thing or possibly the switch is fucked up.

When I was reading up on the controller someone had mentioned the same problem...and another guy mentioned something about setting the sensitivity above 20 mph...but this was if it would lock up even with a slight touch, not locking up period. Wish I could help further but that's all I know at this point. Good luck with it man.

a few possible causes. What kind of Brake Control are you using in the truck? Is the trailer new? Have u towed with it using other trucks? Are you using any kind of adapter from your factory 7-way down to say... a 6-way on the trailer? (a smaller round plug) If the trailers new, its VERY possible they wired it wrong. We used to get that all the time. Odds are the plug is wired wrong, they have the wire for the brakes (would be BLUE on a standard 7way) Going to the center post inside the plug, which is 'hot' or a 12v power supply coming out of the truck.. used for lights or other 12v trailer accessories. To find this out you can simply take apart the plug on the trailer and check it out. If it is a newer brake control (I have the Prodigy myself b/c I got a sweet deal on it lol) or any digital brake control with a 'level' adjustment, you must have it set just right or you'll get NO BRAKES or FULL POWER to the brakes upon plugging it up. Another possibility could be the wires under the trailer going to each axle (theres simply a hot and ground to each brake). If the wires got pinched along the frame or have maybe been hit by road debris, its grounding out somewhere. This shouldn't 'lock' the brakes up but its possible. OH- and as mentioned, just look at the break away swith on the tounge, should be an easy quick check - if its plugged into the little box on the trailer, u should be fine there. Those are a few things it COULD be... sorry for the book, I used to work at an RV dealership so this brought back some good ole memories lol. hey we got $50/hour to figure ur prob out, good idea to ask it here first lol mikey

snaps, one more thing. Who installed the brake control? We ran into alot of newer trucks with the factory hookup under the dash, being wired differently than the Adapter (to go from brake control to under the dash plug). Always the same 2 wires that had to be flipped. Seems like it was GM's and Toyotas though mostly. If none of this crap helps lemme know mp
