OK so I am planing on getting a millermatic 175 or 180, but i don't have the correct power outlet in my garage. What would i need to do to get one installed? My buddy told me this is this something the electric company would need to do, is that true?

it depends on weather or not you have a 30 amp 220 circuit in your house already... if you already have one for your dryer that you don't use then you can use that.

otherwise you will have to put a 220v breaker in your box and run new wires to a junction box.

Yep i actually have one for a dryer in my garage that isn't being used since the dryer is in the house (Garage is detached) So a dryer out is basically what i would need then? I think i might have an out for a dryer some where that isnt being used.

Also does anyone know the difference between the 175 and the 180?

whats a dryer out? you mean outlet? i still think you have to change the outlet because dryer outlets and other 220 outlets can have diffrent plug holes(pattern)

Go to Home Depot and build a extension cord. On one end put the pug that fits into your dryer outlet. On the other end put a metal box and the female plug needed for your welder. I run my plasma, air compressor, and welder like this because i'm working out of my garage until my shop is finished. It'll do the damn thing.

the difference between a 175 and a 180 welder is the current output that it is capable of producing. they are pretty much the same.

the way i set my shit up is a long cord going to from my laundry room up over the rafters into my garage with an outlet mounted to the garage wall. welders usually have different plugs on them than dryers so you will need to get one that fits into the hole you have.

i swap between my compressor and my welder. i would run two straight into the garage, but i rent the house so i don't really want to spend any money on it.

i've been doing it pretty much like this in different places i've lived at for 4 years now with no problems. the only time i blew a breaker was when my compressor tried to kick on and it was -12 outside w/ no heat in the garage.

if you have a 30amp circuit you should be fine to run a 175 or 180 welder.
