You may have seen my post a while back. I was looking for a tig welder. After talking to some guys and thinking about it, I've decided a mig might be better for what I'm doing. I think the compact size of the gun will let me get in those weird, tight spots. I didn't think about that at first, but it would be tough to do the foot control, hold the torch, and feed the wire, all while on my back in some weird position trying to weld a crossmemer or notch in my truck.

What's a good Mig? I want to do frame work in a single pass. Thinking a millermatic 175 or 180 will do the trick. Right now I'm using a 100amp fluxcore lincoln, but it's just too dirty and leaves spatter all over the place. I've got the conversion kit for mig, but it won't do big stuff in the gas mode.

I've got a Millermatic 210 with spool gun. It does really good on thick metal and sheetmetal. The spool gun will weld thicker stainless and Aluminum pretty good. Not as good as a tig but good enough to make a fuel cell. I've also welded with a Miller 175 and they are good machines. Just about anything 220 and a Miller you would be making a good investment. I bagged my truck with a Lincoln 135 from Lowe's. I wouldn't build a frame with it though. It takes to much prep work to weld with a 110 welder. It got the job done though. I havent had anything break, and I drag and drive my truck pretty rough. LOL

I'll have to toss my vote in here for the Millermatic 175. I have had this machine for about 6 years now, and I LOVE IT!!!!

i have a miller 110v and my brother just invested in a hobart 187 and its a 220v....miller and hobart are manufactured and owned by the same company .....ITW or some shit like that...they are both affordable machines and the only difference i was told by a salesman that sells both is the transformer types....the miller is a constant transfomer and the hobart is a tap transformer...basically constant gives you infinite voltage options where the tap is either 1,2,3,4.......but he chose the habort for the tap transformer...teh newer millers and hobart have a smooth arc technology that adjusts the wire feed speed depending on the arc....and it can be difficult to get used to the miller with the constant transformer and get you arc "dialed" in....the hobart is a lil easier to deal with...boh are great machines and i would reccommend either
