S-10 hood hinge question...

A friend at work bought his son a 97 S-10. The son just got a cowl hood for it. When my friend went to install it he realized the hinges have been puddle welded to the bottom of the hood. I didn't think this sounded like something that would be done at the factory. Because the fenders are also welded to the inner panels I think the truck has been wrecked. He says they did a car fax check on it and nothing turned up. What is the best way to go about changing hoods i this situation???

buy new upper hing pieces from the dealer, there is a 13mm bolt and nut under the wiper cowl were it seperates. or drile the spot welds out. ALOT of gm hoods are like that.

Somebody did something the hard way.
S-10 hoods have 2 bolts per hinge. The hinges are bolted to the fender so you will have to get the fender off too.

on s-10s, the hinge IS welded to the hood. the hinge unbolts from the truck from under the cowl. notice the cowl is in 3 sections. take the endcaps off and theres a bolt on each side. hood comes right off.

also, the fender is one piece with the inner structure of the fender. unlike an import. (on imports when you take the fender off its just the skin, the support comes from the engine cradle/inner fenderwells) the inner fender wells unbolt on an s-10 however.

nothing is wrong with his truck, thats how they are.

to install the new hood, drill out the spot welds and bolt the hinges to the hood under structure. pretty sure there are threaded holes in the hood, or at least room for nut and bolt.
