exacccttllyyy but if hes got a 220 welder, forget the flux core, get some .035 and a argon gas mix and crank that bitch up and lay some hot slow stich or hald moon welds. you'll be more than good. the instructions should tell you a recomended power and wire speed for 1/4" metal as well
i used flux on my whole truck(courier) it is awsome when your outside and in the wind were gas is then useless it does leave more spatter but it helps some welders weld thicker metal than with gas and still get the penetration you would need
save money on argon? i pay 20 bucks a bottle and that last me months
i used flux core on my old ranger bodydropped and railed the shit out of it,burnouts all day long never any probs, little bit of spatter tho!
I hope ppl out there dont think there is only one kind of flux cored wire. There is gas shielded and self shielded. The self shield type is somethin I dont recommend just because we are usually in garages and have the opportunity to use somethin more practical.
at my work we use flux core with gas and i love it welds are really nice and penetrates good, i hate self shielded flux core.
I use a flux core for sheetmetal.

let me answer this really easily. stick welding. they still use it. they make ships, tanks, water tanks ect out of the stuff. now i know what you meen about flux core, but stick welding is basically the same thing, just the flux is out side instead of inside. flux core is good stuff, if dont properly. its ugly, dirty, and needs to be wire wheeled to look good. your buddy got a 220 flux core, why is what id ask, but if thats his style great. theres nothgin wrong with it, if welded properly is what i guess im tryin to say
it's flux and gas, my bottle was empty and he couldn't wait to use it.
i luv flux core... it'll warp your body panels if you aren't real patient but it's excellent for the average joe who might be welding in your driveway... it shields WAY better than gas in outdoor conditions if you've got any breeze at all.
The only time you should use gas is when you're welding inside without a breeze!
Just stick weld it and be done. Very strong welds. Its what I welded my frame together with...
