Anybody have any advice on how to treat a freshly rebuilt motor? I heard you're suppose to take it easy the first few miles. I'm having my 1999 chevy s10's 4.3L v6 motor rebuitl, it had 130k miles on it.

when you first crank it up you want to seat the rings a little bit. so just rev the engine up and down for about 5-10 mins. but don't get on it real hard for the first few hundred miles. oh, and also change the oil after about 500 to 1000 miles.

Did you put a new cam in? Theres a process for breaking in cams that you need to take before actually "driving" around and breaking in the motor for the first few hundred miles.

yeah if it has a new cam, you will want to start it, and run the motor at about 1500 rpm for 20-30 mins. then shut it off and let it cool down. if you dont do this, the cam could not break in correctly. and youll be really sad..

oh and by the way, who ever came up with the drive it nicely for a few hundred miles is obviously gay. there is no such thing as a break in period on a motor. if so wha are you breakin in? if anything is wearing, its broken.. rings will seat goin up and down slowly, or fast..

This is the deal on Edelbrock cams. You're supposed to run the motor above 1500 RPMs for an hour. And during that hour your suppose to take the rpm from 1500 to 2000 every few minutes. After that, the vehicle is supposed to be driven 100 miles without the motor dropping below 1500 RPM. My friend got a cam, and just did the hour break in, and then drove the truck around town, and flattened a lobe within days. He called the Edelbrock tech guys, and they told him about driving it for the 100 miles.

They are doing a full rebuilt, replacing everything, pistons, cam, all that. I'm sure the shop that is doing it will do the "let it run for 30min" stuff.

Every engine builer as their own break in procedures, here's what LC says:runn the engine at 1500 rpms for 20 mins, this is for the cam; next 500 miles, don't operate for prolonged periods at any set rpm;don't dive slowly in a high gear;don't rev the engine excessively;don't tow a trailer, or put heavey loads on it; do not use synthetic oils or additives during break in!

dont use synthetics during break or ever for that matter (it truelly is shit trust me). Also do not follow any of those bullshit run it at 2,000 to break in the cam that is a good way to cause damage right off the bat. your best bet is to make sure your to proper operating temperature (oil temp/pressure is your main concern) before raising the rpms at all and dont beat on it for the first 200 miles or so. we usually put about 1-2 hours of low idle time to break our motors in before making a pull on the dyno. Change the oil super early also to remove contaminents and to check for metal/fuel/coolant in the oiling system to help ensure you dont have any problems off the rip (not all machine shops do it right the first time so dont assume its ok) Also before initial start up make sure to prime the oil pump.
