I'm thinking about getting a ford 9inch rear for my truck. I'm using a 4.3L v6. Not too much work is going to be done to it. Maybe a cam, new TBI and intake. I'm gonna use a 700r4 tranny. What gears, etc. should i get for the rear end center section?

Some guy on EBAY is selling these with the following options. I really have no idea what to look for

1)any of 26 gear ratios from 2.50 to 5.14.

2)a WAR case, or a Nodular case.

3)a 31 spline Detroit Locker Differential, a 28 or 31 spline Ford Trac-Loc 4 pinion Posi, or a 28, 31, or 33 spline Full Lightweight Spool.

4)a Nodular or aluminium Daytona pinion support,

5)a billet 1350 yoke, a billet 1310 yoke, or any length Ford yoke.

6}OPTIONS if you want a NEW 28 or 31 billet hat ,nodular carrier Trac-Loc

I'm going to be driving this truck alot to shows, etc.

1)any of 26 gear ratios from 2.50 to 5.14.

What gear for highway depends a lot on your transmission and tire size, if you have overdrive, you can go with a higher ratio and still get decent rpms at highway speed, if you have a 1:1 ratio top gear, then I wouldn't go higher than a 3.50. there are a lot of online rpm calculators to determine what you can live with before buying one, you just need your highest trans gear ratio and the diameter of your rear tires to figure it out. play with your truck in a low gear to determine how high is too high for the rpm's for you and work backwards into a ratio.

2)a WAR case, or a Nodular case.

You shouldn't have a problem w/ either case w a v6, you'll never be putting too much stress on it.

3)a 31 spline Detroit Locker Differential, a 28 or 31 spline Ford Trac-Loc 4 pinion Posi, or a 28, 31, or 33 spline Full Lightweight Spool.

I'm pretty sure you'd just want the Trac-Loc for daily driving, the other two are more for dragstrip applications (i think), and the splines depend soley on your axles, if you get new axles you can get whatever you want, but more splines=more strength generally, and again w/ the v6 you'll be fine w/ any of them.

4)a Nodular or aluminium Daytona pinion support,

don't think it would matter for a v6, but not really sure if there are any benefits to that daytona deal.

5)a billet 1350 yoke, a billet 1310 yoke, or any length Ford yoke.

the billet would be stronger, but standard will be fine for you.

6}OPTIONS if you want a NEW 28 or 31 billet hat ,nodular carrier Trac-Loc

not a clue what that means.

Hope that helped!

With my narrowed frame and wheel offset i wanna run i'm gonna have to narrow my stock rear. I also don't have much room for my 4 link. I can't weld to cast so i might as well get a ford 9inch that is all steel in the center. It will probably cost me jsut as much money so i mgiht as well get a 9inch.

Just bend up a steel hoop that goes over the pumpkin and weld it to the axle tubes and weld the tabs to it..

HERE'S THE FORD 9" (CURRIE VERSION) IN MY '64 CADDY, IT HAS 4.11 GEARS (22" WHEELS) WITH A 700R4, DOES ABOUT 2,200 AT 75 MPH W THE OVERDRIVE. ALSO IT HAS THE EATON/DETROIT TRU-TRAC IN IT. AN IMPORTANT THING YOU'LL WANT TO LOOK INTO IS WHAT KIND OF AXLES ARE HOUSED IN THAT REAR END. SOME WILL USE A BAD ASS REAR END, LOCKER ETC THEN SKIMP ON THE AXLES BECUASE THEY CAN GET PRICEY REALLY QUICK. IF YOU'RE GOING TO SPEND THE 5-6G'S ON A TOP QUALITY REAR END, MAKE SURE IT'S BULLET PROOF FROM TOP TO BOTTOM. (INCLUDING HAVING DISC BRAKES IN IT). ANOTHER IMPORTANT PART IS THE BOLT/BRAKE SET-UP ON IT. I HAD THEM PUT A 78-79 LINCOLN MARK 7 BRAKE SET-UP ON MY 9", IT KEEPS IT A STANDARD CHEVY 5 ON 5 BOLT PATTERN AND CENTER BORE SIZE, AND IS ALSO DISC BRAKES. IT'S DIRTY IN THE PICS AND WAS BEFORE THE UNDERCOATING, BUT YOU GET THE IDEA. A GOOD 9" CAN HOLD IN EXCESS OF 1,200 H.P. NO PROB. AS FAR AS WHICH TYPE OF SPLINE ETC TO USE, IT'S ENTIRELY UP TO YOU, BOTH ARE READILY AVAILABLE AND WILL ONLY DIFFERENTIATE WHICH LOCKER YOU CAN USE. ALL PREFERENCE UNLESS YOU'RE GETTING INTO +1,000 H.P., THEN TEH LITTLE THINGS ALL MATTER. ANYWAYS, HOPE IT HELPS.
