ok, with it being an 84. its not a bulletside. BUT... there is two different styles of bed, the japanese style (with the rail) and the american bed (smooth side)

it is a 720 "bullet sides" are 620's. easiest way to get rid of the "hook" rail is find urself an 85-86.5 bed those are the "smooth" rail beds those are the only yrs that have the smmoth bed 86.5 they switched to the hardbody

the prob with the standard tray from 85+ is that it looks dumb with the straight capping. keep the old one and get some sheet rolled to the profile of the body

whats so bad about the lip bed? i actually tossed my smooth side for a lip.. the only flip side to that is you cant bd with bigger rims without cuttin the outside of the bed.

i have a smooth bed and i'd recommend getting one. i don't know, my two cents is that if everyone is shaving their corners and shaving their handles and shaving everything else to make it "smooth and shaven", then why have a bed with a lip???? doesn't make sense to me. just my $.02

the 84 is a 720. I had one as my first truck...really fun to work on. If you're wanting to loose the bed lip though you will need to look into finding a 85 bed. These didn't have the lip and were produced until the Hardbody the D-21 came out in 86 1/2.
