cold rolled is better and more consistant and is square but its expensive, hot rolled is cheep and has alot of mill scale on it and is inconsistant and the edges arnt square

for suspension or chassis components id most deffinately use cold rolled, only way to go, but thats just my personal opinion

Hot rolled steel comes in thicker sizes as well. At my shop we have it up to an inch thick, while cold rolled we only have up to 10 gauge.

cold is great for just about anything you want that requires a good appearance without the headache of grinding the mill scale off...cold comes in different grades as well i think...we use both at work and the cold we have in 16ga-1/4"...we have hot rolled all the way up to i think it's 1 3/4"...cold gives some of the most beautiful welds(granted your a decent welder)and if you use an anti-spatter spray, is hella easy to clean and prep for paint!
