ok just out of curiosity, how might i set up a share folder between the computers in my house? I have 3 computers all hooked up to my wireless router. 2 of them which are pc's are hooked up threw ethernet cables and the laptop uses a wireless connection. I was told that when you have a router all of the computers in the house that use the router are linked together and can share a folder. I am just wondering because sometimes i take my laptop to work and its a real pain in the ass to have to burn stuff to a cd just so i can take it with me. It would be easier if i could just drop some music files and whatnot in a folder and be able to open it up on the laptop. Thats how our college system is setup and i was just curious if i could do something similar. Thanks in advance

I am going to assume your are using Windows XP Professional. If this is the case then follow these steps.

PC to create shared folder on-----------------------------1) Open My Computer2) Click on Tools -> Folder Options3) Click on the tab labeled VIEW4) Un-Check the box labeled USE SIMPLE FILE SHARING5) Click the button labeled OK6) Close My Computer7) Right-click on My Computer -> Manage Expand Local Users and Groups9) Right-click on USERS -> New User...10) Enter a username & password for your new user (write these down so you don't forget)11) Un-Check the box labeled USER MUST CHANGE PASSWORD AT NEXT LOGON12) Check the box labeled USER CAN NOT CHANGE PASSWORD13) Check the box labeled PASSWORD DOES NOT EXPIRE14) Click on the button labeled CREATE15) Close the COMPUTER MANAGEMENT window16) Open My Computer and navigate to the folder you want to share (ie C:\MP3)17) Right-click on the folder and then select Sharing and Security...1 Select the radio button labeled SHARE THIS FOLDER19) Type in a simple share name such as MP3 in the text box labeled SHARE NAME20) Click the button labeled APPLY21) Click on the tab labeled SECURITY21) Click on the button labeled ADD22) Type in the username you just created above23) Click on the button labeled OK24) Click on the user in the security list so that it is highlighted. Below click on the check box labeled FULL CONTROL under ALLOW.25) Click on the button labeled OK.26) You should now see an icon of a hand under the folder name. This shows it is shared.

PC to link to shared folder---------------------------1) Open My Computer2) In the address bar type \\\ (ex \\pc01\mp3)3) Eventually a window will pop-up requesting the username and password for authentication. Type in the username and password you created on that machine.4) You should now be connected.

Let me know if you need anything else.

Then you may not be using Windows XP Professional... Please go to START/RUN and type in WINVER and click OK.

This will give you the Operating System type revision. Let me know what that is and I can help you further.
