BUILDING A FUEL CELL

I need a custom fuel cell but I don't want to pay $200-$300 forone mainly because I can't afford it. My question is, can I build one with 14 ga. sheet metal and do I need to treat it somehow to keep the inside from rusting? I don't have any experience with aluminum so that's not an option for material. I can use my stock pump and sending unit sense they are in tank components. I just need to build something besides a plain box.

im prety sure gasoline doesnt cause rust,i would go 12 if i were you or u will get some bowing in the center of the walls.You can buy a gas tank sealer for pin hoels and what not.I buy mine at a local mom and pop restoration shop but i believe eastwood sells it.

yea run 12, and if you look on the POR-15 website because they have a gas tank coating. Eastwood.com sells some too. make sure your tank is deep enough for your pump and sender and you should also take some 14g metal and punch some holes in it lik 5/8 or 3/4 and weld it inside for a baffle to keep the gas from sloshing around. i would take it to a metal shop that has big breakes and get it all bent up so there are minimal welds.

Thanks for the input, I wasn't sure about the rust issue but I wanted to be sure.

10 guage if you mig weld it. so it doesnt warp when welding it solid.
and get it bent on a giant brake

also some motorcycle shops keep the tank coating in stock, for their tank repairs

yea 10-12 it depends on the welds, tig would be nice. depending on how much you wanna pay or how good you can weld, i would pay someone to lay down some sick welds

Gas tanks can rust. If the tank sits empty or at least not full for a period of time, the remaining airspace will form condensation on the inside and rust it up. Not a problem though with the sealer.

Ok, well how would this sealer work? Once the tank is assembled, somehow blow it in through the filler hole or something??

just pour it inside and then shake it around so it covers all sides.

be sure to use some dychem to check for leaks too.
