the guy above me that is.....
i'd go with a 6.5 turbo, they are easy to find and not too expensive, gear it right with a rear end over 4:1 and you'll pull a house down, just wont do it quick.... and fuel economy will be better than the gas motors....
the trip to the machine shop with that old block will probably cost you 1000 easy, and you will need to bring everything with you, the harmonic balancer, flexplate or flywheel, and all of the rotating assy to get it balanced unless you buy a prebalanced kit that includes everything..... i know i have enough in my 383, transmission and accessories to have bought a duramax and tranny dropout off ebay, and its just a motor built for street......
I agree w/Cris. I know you said expect diesel motors but fuel economy wise, you can't beat it. I guess it all really depends on how much towing you will actually be doing w/it. Is it the tow pig or a daily driver that you use once a year or so to tow with?? Both the 383 and the 454 if built well are impressive motors. But building old carbureted motors for horsepower kills fuel economy when it comes to towing or haulin azz. Hell they suck some fuel down at idle too. Lol. Anyways, good luck w/the swap which ever way you decide to go.

if your gonna be towing slap a big block 454 in it and be done with it
WTF are you talking about? Stroker motors are known for low end power. More stroke, low end power, less stroke is better for high RPMs.
shutup i was high when i wrote thatand the 383 stroker in my friends 82 silverado revs out to almost 10 grand and doesnt really shit and get until it hits 5+
454 would still be better for towingso it doesnt matter..
Are you sure its not de-stroked? A 383 shouldn't be able to rev 10 grand. I had a de-stroked 350 put together with a custom 283 crank and custom length rods, and it wouldn't rev 10, but it made better power above 2000 RPM, wheres as a stroker would make better power before then.
Your gonna want a big block, our old 72 burban with a built small block was fine daily driving, but deff could have had more torque for towing. The gas milage should end up about the same either way. Big block for sure!!!!!!
thanks guys, i have people on the look out for a big block now. the only reason i said not a diesel is cuz i can't afford what i want right now which is the 6.6 duramax. i guess i'll start looking into the 6.5 turbo. any suggusted sites to check out for this stuff?
