720 transmission HELP!!!!!!!!!

Here's the ?. I have a 720 with an automatic (ugh!) But anyways, i think it needs fluid... i just don't wanna overfill it. So when do i need to check it? Hot or cold? Running or not? Please help.... Thanks!
