Police set rules of the road
Showfest cars and trucks restricted to 3.7-mile loop
By AMY REDWINE - Delta Democrat Times
There's only one day left before those shiny trucks and cars start strutting their stuff up and down Greenville's roads. But drivers beware!
The Assorted Miniatures Car and Truck Show, also known as Showfest, will be the main attraction in Greenville this weekend at the Washington County Convention Center.
Greenville Police Chief Lon Pepper said the Showfest will still be fun, but there are a few new rules as far as "showing off their vehicles."
"There is an unofficial ride route every year on Friday and Saturday night and basically, for this year, we have a 3.7-mile area for them to ride," he said.
Each year, patrons of Showfest ride along U.S. 82 in all four lanes of traffic but, due to traffic congestion, a few steps have been taken to lighten the traffic flow.
Showfest-goers will be able to ride from U.S. 82 and Beauchamp to U.S. 82 and Raceway, from Raceway to Reed Road and then back to Beauchamp, using the right lane.
"We are trying to keep it so that it's basically a compromise for them to ride and show off their vehicles while, at the same time, working to keep through traffic on U.S. 82 moving," Pepper said.
The chief said the Greenville Police Department, the Washington County Sheriff's Department and the Mississippi Highway Patrol will be on scene.
Pepper said this allows plenty of space for people to show off their rides but also allows for emergency services to get through if need be.
"We are looking forward to having a safe, enjoyable, experience for people watching along 82, Reed, Raceway and Beauchamp," he said. "We want to do this in a manner that is safe and fun but also a family-oriented event."
Pepper said if law enforcement action has to be taken, it will. "We will have adequate law enforcement."
He said authorities will also be enforcing several state laws. Flyers will be given out to all festival participants. Addressed in the flyers are traffic routes and laws that will be enforced.
Specifically named are laws relating to open containers and possession of alcoholic beverages, indecent exposure, careless driving, failure or refusal to comply with order or direction of police officer, reckless driving, profanity, and disturbances by explosions, noises or offensive conduct.
