Spyware?

I think my computer has a shit load of spyware. Because pop up ads come up and I only have this page on and my aim. I use to have kazza but I reformated my hard dive to get rid of kazzas shit. But my question is how do I get rid of spyware with out haveing some program on my computer all the time.
