You could use newer Jeep axles, driver's side pumpkin. I think the F150 or Bronco (78 & 79) Dana 44 would be a better bet. Second, the Wagoneer (83+) uses a DS pumpkin and 6-lugs.

I'm working on the exact same project! Thanks for the tips rxinhed. Looks like I'm going to the junkyard to do some research.

Narrowing is optional, unless you really want to. Baldy runs the F150 front axle on a D50, uses 35" muds, but is for dedicated trail rig. I think the Wagoneer axle is a pretty good match without mods.
